CHAPTER SIXTEEN: AUGUST

by Taylor Swift

The next morning, Gina stood in the kitchen, stabbing at the buttons on the coffee maker to deprogram the timer and get a pot brewing right now. She deeply detested waking up early on Saturdays. What kind of tortuous bastard sets up seminars for new teachers at eight o’clock on Saturday mornings?

But her anger dissipated as her thoughts wandered to Cori. Gina knew they would be revisiting the co-bedding topic tonight, once Sarah was over at Jeremiah’s, and she was ready for it. Certainly, Cori knew that suggesting they share a bedroom would mean that they were a couple. Sarah and their friends would know, and Cori would finally be romantically committed to someone. Gina was nervous. It would be her first relationship with a woman, and really, her first truly sexual relationship with anyone. But if Cori was ready, Gina wanted to go there with her. Their connection was undeniable. She shook her head and stirred cream into her coffee.

Then, she heard socked feet shuffling down the hall. Probably Cori or Sarah using the bathroom, she thought. But the muffled steps passed the bathroom and came closer. And it sounded like more than two feet. Who could that be? Why would Sarah and Cori be tiptoeing down the hall together? Gina had only seconds to ask herself those questions before she watched a female stranger slink past the kitchen, guided by Cori’s hand on the small of her back. Gina’s jaw dropped as the two of them turned noticing her.

“Oh hey, you must be one of Cori’s roommates,” said the stranger politely. She turned to Cori and said, “I thought we had to be quiet because they needed to sleep in?”

Gina felt her stomach drop to the floor and her blood turned to ice. She shifted her eyes to stare at Cori, who looked like she was choking. Gina closed her mouth and clenched her jaw. Her face burned so hot she could feel the backs of her eyes melting.

Gathering her resolve, she glanced back to the stranger and said, “Oh, hey to you too. You must be one of Cori’s old friends needing a place to stay or something, right? Cori, I didn’t know you were having guests from out of town.”

“Oh, I’m not from out of town or anything. I’m from Ronkonkoma. And Cori and I just met last night,” the idiotic stranger helpfully explained.

“Well, I think we’re all good with the introductions,” Cori interjected in a volume a little too loud for the conversation, her eyes too wide, her face too red. “Um, let’s just, uh, get you on your way. Don’t want to miss the next train to Long Island.” Cori turned to usher the stranger away from the kitchen to the front door. Gina stood watching, arms crossed and jaw set.

“Cori, call me, okay?” said the stranger, as she looked up at Cori’s deeply flushed face. Cori nodded quickly and plastered what Gina knew to be a fake grin on her face.
